A home among twisted hills, small sketchbook drawing, pencil and pen.

  1. Shaun have you read The island By Armin Greder. It astounds me that he managed to get his work published, it is utterly terrifying and beguiling. This image reminds me of his art work which is so utterly from the heart. I have come to believe that you can spot it when an illustrator is lying, as in, they are withholding something. There is something about honesty. I think that is why we find children's art work so refreshing. It seems to be a long journey back there. seeing images like this lets me know it is possible.

    1. Great comment. It's hard to be honest too! I'm reminded of something Picasso said when asked how he felt about fake Picassos, 'I've done many myself.' I agree about Armin Greder, his work is as sincere as it gets, and all the more haunting because of that. The Island is an absolute classic.

  2. Hello Shaun,

The isolation and loneliness in your illustrations is so evocative and touching- your work always has so much empathy, it draws your readers in and makes us feel connected to you and to your characters, your settings. I'm a graduate student, and a large part of my final project is about creating images that the readers will empathise with. Is there a way I might be able ask you a couple of questions about your work?

    Thank you,
    Amy

    1. Thanks Amy. You can ask questions here, or if you prefer, info@shauntan.net. They must only be yes/no questions (just kidding)

  3. Just realised there is some problem with that previous email address, nothing goes through. If you pass on your own email, I can let you know an alternative route for any questions.
